Faith in Action

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul USA harnesses the power of community and partnerships to feed, clothe, house and heal individuals and families in our community who have nowhere else to turn for help. Our volunteer members – known as Vincentians – are compelled by our Catholic faith to serve those who are needy and suffering.

From rental assistance and homelessness prevention, to thrift stores and food pantries, to disaster recovery and charitable pharmacies, we share our time and treasure with those who need help and hope. We believe EVERYONE deserves a fair chance at a bright future, regardless of income or life circumstances.

Did you know SVdP was started by college students?

In 1833, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, a 20-year-old law student at the Sorbonne, responded to a challenge: What is your faith doing for the poor? Inspired by the teachings of St. Vincent de Paul, Frédéric and his friends sought to live out their faith through person-to-person encounters with those in need. They combined action with prayer, discussing ways to address the pressing needs of the poor in Paris. Their mission spread quickly, rooted in humility, simplicity, and love.

Today, the Society continues Frédéric’s legacy, serving millions of people worldwide through compassion and personal encounters with those in need.

Our Essential Elements

Spirituality

Putting our faith into action. Sharing, reflecting, and praying. Seeing and being the face of Christ.

Friendship

Making meaningful, life-long friendships. Encouraging and supporting one another on our journeys in faith.

Service

Personal encounters with friends in need. Empowering the voices of the poor. Pursuing a more just world.

“I want all young people with both head and heart to assemble for some charitable work.”

– Frédéric Ozanam

A hands on way to serve our neighbor. See the Face of Christ. Be the Face of Christ.

Is the Society the secret to holiness?

For nearly 200 years, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been a way for Catholics to grow in holiness, and serve the poor. Today we learn that many of our favorite saints and blesseds, as young adults, were involved in the Society, serving in their communities. You could be next!

“In my life I want to become better and do a little good.”

– Frédéric Ozanam
